Flotilla III - The Green Armada
DACVI Flotilla III
The Green Armada
The Dartmouth Alumni Club of the Virgin Islands (DACVI) has successfully completed an 11-day Alumni Club Annual Meeting.
We met at Fort Burt Hotel on May 6 for the DACVI Meeting and Election of Officers, then 18 sailors left the next morning for a 9-night sail through the British Virgin Islands, overnighting and dining at all of these:
Road Town, Tortola – The Pub (Annual Meeting)
The Bight, Norman Island – Pirates Bight Restaurant
Manchioneel Bay, Cooper Island – Cooper Island Beach Club
Gorda Sound, Virgin Gorda – Leverick Bay Restaurant
Anegada – Neptune’s Treasure
Anegada – Lobster Trap Restaurant
Lee Bay, Great Camanoe – Dine on board
Little Harbor, Jost Van Dyke – Sidney’s Peace and Love
Diamond Cay, Jost Van Dyke – Foxy’s Taboo
Great Harbor, Peter Island – Ocean’s Seven
Returning to port on May 16, we convened for a breakup dinner at the Royal BVI Yacht Club, where the Officers welcomed us with the respect we were due.
Days were spent on board, sailing to numerous quiet and picturesque anchorages for swimming and snorkeling. Nights found us at beachfront restaurants where we swapped sailing stories and then joined in very hearty renditions of "As The Backs Go Tearing By", "Glory To Dartmouth", and the Alma Mater. As always, we left stunned diners in absolute awe of our spirit and camaraderie. The later we sang each night, the better we sounded. To each other, anyway.
One of the trip highlights this year was the Wedding-At-Sea of two DACVI members - - Bill Rich and Sylvia Hahn-Griffiths - - aboard the good ship Varekai, with the ceremony performed by Captain Hills. The newlyweds immediately started honeymooning ashore at Cooper Island Beach Club, and kept honeymooning blissfully the rest of the trip.
Sidney’s Peace and Love on Jost Van Dyke let us serve our own drinks at their Honor Bar. Lots of dancing afterwards.
Participating in Flotilla III were the following:
Gerry and Martha Hills
Kevin and Lyn Swenson
Chip and Cindy Johnston
Ed and Paulette Jereb
Tom and Mia Laughlin
Jack Hopke and Barbara Siede
Jon Roll and Pamela Ryan
Bill Rich and Sylvia Hahn-Griffiths
And Tom Zurich from Tortola joined us at The Pub.
DACVI is now in the process of organizing Flotilla IV, to take place May 5-14, 2016, in the British Virgin Islands. Some early reservations have already been received, and it looks like a record number of sailors will be joining. We charter bareboat sailboats from Road Town, Tortola, and sail them ourselves. Everyone is welcome. Some people are accomplished sailors - - some have never been sailing. You don't need to have experience to sail with us - - you just need to like having fun.
DACVI currently has approximately 45 memberships, with approximately 80 members. Our members live on 5 Caribbean Islands and in 17 U.S. states. For information about Flotilla IV, send email to Gerry Hills '68.
DACVI Flotilla III, The Green Armada
Plans are already forming. Dates are:
May 6 – DACVI Annual Meeting, Fort Burt Hotel
May 7 – 16 – DACVI Flotilla III, The Green Armada
May 16 – Farewell Dinner, Fort Burt Hotel
We’ll be chartering boats from Conch Charters, Road Town, British Virgin Islands. Everyone is welcome, including guests. The limiting factor is the number of qualified captains we can get. You don’t have to be an experienced sailor to join us - - just like having fun. You need to be fit enough to get into and out of dinghies for trips ashore. Everyone will have time at the helm and will help run the boats. For information, send email to Gerry Hills, DACVI President, firstname.lastname@example.org.
