We all have memories of our Freshman Trip if we were fortunate enough to have gone on one. Ten years ago on the grassy slope behind the Moosilauke Lodge the Class of 1968 chose as its 50th Reunion Project endowing the Freshman Trip so that all members of the incoming first year class could participate regardless of financial circumstances. The stories below, some of which appeared in the winter and spring 2018 editions of the Class Newsletter epitomize the spirit of adventure reflected in Dartmouth's tradition of Freshman Trips.
John Muir's words illuminate that spirit of adventure: "Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature’s darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but nature’s sources never fail."
