Douglass Bust Dedication
Give a Rouse Awards
Summary of the weekend's activities
The weekend began with an informal dinner gathering at the Hilton Garden Inn on Friday night. Among the attendees were Ced Kam and Susan, Jack and Barbara Hopke, Mark Waterhouse and Leslie Cargill, Roger Anderson and Jim and Bev Lawrie.
The Class Committee meeting was held at 10:00 am in the Winship Room at Blunt Alumni Center (see the meeting agenda). Among the many topics of discussion, President David Peck announced the dates for the 55th reunion, June 12-15, 2023. David is recruiting reunion organizers, including a reunion chair. Following the meeting, many of the attendees moved on to lunch at Murphy's on Main Street. Others sampled the free food at the food trucks located on Tuck Mall (part of the grand opening of the West Campus complex).
Next on the agenda was the dedication of the Douglass Bust presented to the College in 2020 and now on display in the Rauner special collections library. There were approximately 30 people in attendance including classmates, faculty and members of the administration. Be sure to watch the video at the link above. There were presentations by David Peck, Roger Anderson, Joe Nathan Wright, David Walden, Sue Mehrer (Dean of Libraries), Jay Satterfield (Rauner staff), Professor Robert Bonner, and Woody Lee.
Following the dedication, the group moved over to Reiss Hall (the old card catalogue area on the main floor of Baker Library) for a reception and viewing of multiple wall box displays of Woody Lee's history of black students at Dartmouth. Christian Slater, '22 was in attendance for both the Douglass dedication and at the reception. As a research associate for the project, Christian was responsible for organizing research materials and preparing materials for the Baker wall box displays. Reading the stories of early black Dartmouth graduates was inspiring. You can learn more at the Blacks at Dartmouth page and by listening to Woody's and John Pfeiffer's presentation for the class spring 2022 webinar series.
Following the reception, a small group of classmates walked over to the Hood Museum where Roger Anderson presented the Class of '68's recent donations of artwork to the Hood (see the photos and read more about the Zia Dough Bowl and the William Wallace Reid painting, Roberta).
The day ended with a class dinner and coctail party at the Hilton Gardens Inn. The festivities included presentation of the Give A Rouse award to classmates Tom Causer, Henry Masur, Peter Buck, Peter Hofman, Richard Lappin, and Hank Paulson. See the video of the presentations and read the citations. Following the presention of the awards, classmate and GAR award recipient from last year, Sherwood Guernsey requested a moment to make extemporaneous comments about the GAR award. It was a great and inspiring moment shared in a video clip.
It was a memorable weekend, enjoyed by all who were able to attend!
